Cheating Doesn't Pay [Monday, November 17, 2008]

|
|
There is always one person who takes the game of chance one step too far. This individual somehow believes that he or she can somehow cheat the system and escape without being noticed. Online gaming venues provide players with a sense of false security.
|
Somehow there exists a notion that because transactions are taking place online they remain nameless and faceless. This in turn leads them to believe that cheating is acceptable.
One player learned that this is rarely the case. The lesson was learned the hard way. Sorel Mizzi is a repeat offender of this issue. The first occurrence of cheating was rapidly brought to the public online gaming community's attention at the time. A notable poker gaming website called attention to Sorel's action in front of the current players at the table.
Seasoned poker players are well aware of the rules and regulations that govern a particular gaming website. It is common practice not to create multiple player accounts on any one gaming website. Not only is this unethical it is unfair to the other players who are following the rules. It is this multiple account fraud that Mizzi was practicing.
One could argue that Mizzi was a novice player and therefore unaware of the rules. This could not be farther from the truth. Sorel Mizzi is a seasoned poker playing professional for the online community. Mizzi was caught breaking the multiple accounts rule during tournament play on the popular gaming website Fulltiltpoker.com.
Once the poker gaming website was made aware of the situation, Mizzi was called on it and immediately banned from the website. The public banning happened in the middle of a poker tournament game. After Mizzi was removed from the tournament and the website, the game continued as if nothing had happened. It served as a message to other players as well.
That public humiliation was over a year ago. It stands to reason that the lesson was learned. Sadly this was not to be the case. Mizzi was recently found guilty of engaging in the same multiple account practice on another poker gaming website. This time the victim was pokerstars.com. Upon learning of Mizzi's actions, the gaming website banned the player for a period of six months. Mizzi promptly appealed the suspension and had it reduced to three months.
This is certainly an extreme example of cheating. However it is not the only type of cheating that online websites are forced to deal with. The hope is that by watching the public humiliation that Mizzi has endured will detract other players from engaging in the same practice.
