Two Sides of Poker Legality Coin [Sunday, November 23, 2008]

One of the long standing debates in the online casino world is defining exactly what is legal and what is illegal in the practice of online gaming. Certain rules and regulations restrict what that definition is. Another set of rules and regulations leave room for personal interpretation as to what breaking the rules comes down to in the end.
|
At the center of this debate is an individual who holds a place on the prestigious University of Florida basketball team. Nick Calathes has recently come under fire for making a decision that some consider being illegal in action. He has been engaging in online poker gaming during off hours from practice and school. When asked about the matter Calathes did comment that he does not consider his actions to be illegal in any way.
Standing behind him is the head coach Billy Donovan and Athletic Director Jeremy Foley. These two individuals fully support Nick Calathes and his choice of online actions. The reason for this is simple; he came forward and admitted to engaging in the actions but stands firm in not having done anything in violation of the sports team rule or school rules. Part of that gaming action has resulted in Calathes losing money at the virtual poker games.
Athletic director Foley explained that the school completely reviewed the conduct code for athletes including issues of eligibility. After having done so, Foley feels that all relevant issues have been addressed and that no violation on the part of Calathes has been committed. As far as the school is concerned, the matter has been resolved and is no longer an issue that needs to be dealt with.
NCAA officials also weighed in on the issue. According to their rule book, online casino gaming is permitted and is not a direct violation of any rules or regulations that govern college athletes. The organization is also quick to state that the rules and regulations on the books focus more on sports betting than on online poker. Even so, some feel that there has been a violation as college athletes should not engage in any shape or form of online casino practice. It does not matter if there is money lost, money to be lost or just harmless play.
Government officials do not feel the same way. Rules and regulations on their books deem online casino practice illegal regardless of whether or not there is money placed on the table. Recently passed issue named the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is working to address these exact issues.
