There's no stopping casino gambling in the USA [Monday, July 10, 2006]

Four out of five people in the USA approve of casino gambling and poker remains one of the most popular games. Also, casinos are increasing their revenues. These are the essential findings that emerge from the 2006 survey of casino entertainment published by the American Gaming Association.
|
A key element of the report describes who are the typical Internet gamblers in the States. He or she is under 40, college educated and is relatively wealthy. This is logical because the younger generations are the ones most open to Internet activity and only those people with a relatively health disposable income tend to use some of it in gambling activities. Over 70% of respondents said that they started playing on the Web in the last two years. A more worrying statistic is that 55% believe web-based casino operators are cheaters and 46% think that other players are cheaters. This means that online casinos must work hard to assure players that they belong in the 'good casino' group.
In terms of overall numbers, despite online gambling as a topic having high media visibility, it is still a minority activity. The overall percentage of Americans who gamble online is relatively small. Only 11 states allow casino gambling (21% out of all the member states) and this represents the activity by 455 commercial casinos. In 2005 they increased their collective revenues to $30.3 billion.
Out of this sum, Las Vegas casinos account for $6 billion, followed by $5 billion for Atlantic City. In the areas in which it operates, the gambling industry provides major employment opportunities. These total 354,000 jobs and wages total $12.6 billion, including benefits and tips. In 2005 the gambling industry paid $4.92 billion in taxes to state and local government. No doubt, many local governments without casinos look with envy at those who host these money-spinners.
With regard to the kinds of games people like to play in casinos, the clear favorite is poker. Nearly one in five Americans who indulged in online gaming in 2005 chose to play poker, both to spend time with family and friends and also to apply their skills and playing strategies. If you scratch below the surface of the average Internet gambler, you are likely to find somebody who is as interested in learning and applying skill as in being exposed to sheer luck.
Finally, what about the nay-sayers, i.e those people who oppose gambling? In 2005 this group increased in strength from 15% to 18% of all those surveyed. However 80% of people still approve of gambling. In addition, 83% say that gambling is a matter of choice and 72% say that casinos are a valuable part of the entertainment and tourist economy.
So what's the overall message? Simply this: Have fun playing your casino games; look for some element of skill, and don't take any of it too seriously.
