Poker Tournaments are Prime Time TV hits [Saturday, July 15, 2006]

How interesting can it be to look over peoples shoulders playing poker? It seems that nothing provides more compulsive TV watching. Here is all the drama you want from a reality show personal struggle between individuals, huge amounts of money at stake, the blend of skill and luck that can transform a moment. Welcome to the new TV show stoppers World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour!
|
These two sports events are now drawing TV viewing audiences in the USA that compare in size to audiences watching National Football League and NASCAR (stock car racing) events. In addition, nearly 150 countries broadcast the World Poker Tour and the event attracts 9 million viewers in the UK alone. What makes watching the event exciting is the special camera that shows players' hole cards. It almost transports viewers into each player's seat, getting them to ask the question "What would I play now?"
Last year's tour paid out close to $100 million in prize money and attracted 500 participants. The World Series of Poker, the largest poker tournament of all, has the richest prize of at least $10 million for the winner. Who can resist imagining a win based on a turn of cards. One great role-model is Chris Moneymaker (yes, either that's his name or he changed it), an Average Joe who surprised everyone in 2003 by turning his $39 entry ticket into a $2.5 million first prize. Chris is still going strong.
With so many viewers turning in, the big advertisers have started to sponsor these TV Poker shows big-time. Beer companies like Miller Brewing spend advertising budgets in the hundreds of thousands of dollars on sponsorship. Swatch is also spending thousands of dollars to get their name advertised during top-league poker events.
What's the prognosis for the future? Poker tournaments on TV are getting more and more popular, with ever-larger prizes. There's always a winner and a loser. Anybody, whether physically fit or not, can play poker all their lives so they identify with the game. And there's nothing like the prospect of instant riches.
