What does the market tell us about online gambling? [Sunday, July 23, 2006]

It's often said that 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' and that is exactly the case with regard to voices calling for the banning of online gambling. They don't have all the facts and argue from a standpoint of emotion, not logic.
|
A recent survey that compared activities of players at land-based and online casinos found that the typical online player is well educated, can afford the occasional gamble and is not being led anywhere that he or she is not going anyway.
Here are the findings and comments:
Who are the main players in online gambling?
- Players aged 21-29, gambling in online casinos - 43%
- Players aged 21-29, gambling in land-based casinos - 9%
- Players aged 60+, gambling in online casinos - 2%
- Players aged 60+, gambling in land-based casinos - 37%
Comments
When you are young and busy, you want the convenience of gambling online.
When you are into retirement age, you want the social contact of a real casino.
Who are the politicians trying to protect?
- Players aged 40+ as part of the online casino customer base less than 33%.
- Players aged 40+ as part of the land-based casino customer base over 66%.
Comments
Most politicians target people in the 40+ age group. They know that relatively few of these people indulge in online gambling. So it is a safe activity for the politicians to try to ban online gambling.
Does gambling exploit people's weaknesses?
- Online players with a college degree - 61%
- Online gamblers with an annual household income of over $60,000 - 58%
- College graduates who are unemployed - 2%
Comments
People who play online are well aware of what they are doing, and can afford this activity. They play not out of desperation to improve their lives, but for the sake of recreation.
What are people's attitudes to gambling?
- People who played the lottery during the past year - 73%
- People who also play in land-based casinos - 66%
Comments
Those people who play in online casinos are also those who indulge their gambling interests in other ways. They want to play and will find a way to do so.
What attracts people to online gambling?
- The convenience of being able to play anywhere and at any time - 48%
Comments
People who earn reasonable sums every month (over $5000) are very busy and cannot spare the time to be on a real casino floor. They prefer the convenience of betting online and are willing to pay for it. This is in contrast to retired people, who are the main targets for land-based casinos.
This survey about gambling preferences shows that the Internet increases peoples choices in undertaking their chosen activities. It appeals to a large section of the population with the available money and the interest in gambling as a recreational activity. If land-based casinos continue to appeal mainly to the older generation, they will stagnate and suffer poor growth.
