US Government battles Online Gambling. Are they like Don Quixote? [Monday, September 25, 2006]

There's a lot of comment at the moment about the US Government wishing to ban online gambling. The Californians have even taken this a step further by introducing a bill (introduced by Assemblyman Dario Frommer) that would punish anyone found indulging in online gambling even in the privacy of their own homes. Potential fines in California would be up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 per transaction. Where is all this leading? Back to the Prohibition Era of 1919-1930? There's a danger of this.

One has the image of the USA Government, sitting astride its horse like some latter-day Don Quixote, wishing to do battle against all the windmills of the Online Casinos and Gaming Rooms. What chance do they have of succeeding? Virtually zero, because it is within human nature to gamble just like it is to drink alcoholic beverages. Banning this activity would simply send it underground. We saw what a powerful boost Organized Crime got between the World Wars when Prohibition gave it the chance to start trading in liquor and raking huge profits from it. The same thing would happen with online betting. The only solution is to allow the activity - but control it and place it under appropriate restrictions.
In any event, even in the States, there's no question of having a 'gambling-free' environment. You only have to look at all the state lotteries, horse and dog racetracks and other sports betting not to mention the nation's choice of over 700 offline casinos. Internet casinos are simple a new version of these traditional betting venues and they are often far better regulated and controlled. If an online casino has not played fair with you, you can complain via countless 'casino watchdog' forums. Bad news will spread quickly and the casino in question will find itself 'frozen out' (i.e blacklisted) until it changes its ways.
If Mary Peachtree wants to enjoy herself with the occasional game of Progressive Slots or Video Poker, why shouldn't she be able to do so? She's earned her money. Like the vast majority of people, she is responsible. She's a busy wife and mother, without the time or energy to make special trips to land-based casinos. There's no reason why she shouldn't be able to make her choices online and play at a top-rate casino. This is the place that protects her security, gives her good playing odds and bonuses and offers her useful playing tips and guidance. For any government to try to legislate away these basic freedoms is appalling.
Here's another reason why a full ban on Internet gambling will never be effective: money talks! Financial controllers in state governments know how the revenue from legitimate gambling activities helps to fund their social programs and improve living conditions. What are they going to do raise taxes or take a cut from the huge sums that flow through gambling channels?
Most people realize that they are more likely to lose in a casino (online or offline) than win. This is, in effect, a payment for their entertainment and relaxation. At least they know that some of the money they have lost will be reflowed into the community for the public's benefit. This is the ultimate and immutable law of Gambling: go with the flow because you simply cannot stop it.
