A gambler's selective memory [Saturday, January 28, 2006]

|
If there's one thing that a gambler would wish to have more of, it is memory. Who can remember how many hands of cards they've played, how many times they've wagered on a roulette spin or how often they've waited to see how the dice will fall?
|
It's too much detail, especially when you spread it across a gambling session that can last for hours. Yet it is these small details that can make the difference between winning and losing. Many gamblers have a selective memory, remembering only some parts of their games. Their lack of memory of the other parts exposes them to greater risk of losing money. What can they do?
Let's start by understanding a few basics about the human mind. A common saying is that first impressions count' in other words, you are likely to remember the first thing you see. Another characteristic of memory is that you will remember the last thing you see. In psychological terms these are called the Primacy Effect and the Recency Effect. In the first case, the information we get first is weighted more heavily because it is assumed to be more important. In the second case, if there is a time lag between the first piece of information and the next, then the last piece of information will carry more weight.
How does this apply to remembering a long string of things? Let's say somebody quickly lays on a table 15 small kitchen utensils (chopping knife, grater, bread knife, egg timer, vegetable peeler, garlic crusher, egg beater, meat mallet, poultry scissors, pizza cutter, nut crusher, corkscrew, can opener, salad knife, knife sharpener) and then just as quickly takes them away in the same order. You'll probably remember the first items laid down (Primacy) and the last ones removed (Recency). It will be much harder to remember the ones in the middle.
That's how gambling sessions are remembered too. At the end of the day, you might say I got a really lucky streak in 5-hand poker, winning $500 in the first half hour, but in the end dropped $400 at the roulette table. The cycles of positive and negative results follow one another, with the middle details' being excluded somehow from your memory. Yet it's these middle' sessions that can often give you indications about how to play better.
This is the time to adopt the same mental discipline as seasoned gamblers. They know that they can't control the element of chance, only their own power to make the right decision at the right time. So they keep asking themselves questions such as: Was I cool and collected enough during each play? Did I keep an eye on my bankroll all the time? Did I enter the game at the right point? This constant analysis of events is what makes the difference. If you are gambling but not using your mind sharply, you are simply giving the advantage back to the casino.
Here are some tips
- Split your gambling time into short sessions (every 20 minutes or so) that will allow you to play with maximum concentration.
- Make a habit of carefully evaluating your game every time your bankroll jumps or drops by a significant amount.
- Keep thinking about the strategies you use to play: why are you winning or losing? Should you be redefining your goals.
- Watch your bankroll. If it is reaching the minimum, are you getting too emotional?
Your strong efforts to constantly refocus your game will help to close the gaps in these forgotten areas between the Primacy and Recency Effect. Your gambling plays will become sharper and more decisive. You'll become more aware of what's needed to come out on top.
