Legalized Gambling and Society [Sunday, December 24, 2006]

The recent US law has renewed the world debate about whether or not gambling is a "healthy" product of modern day society. Meanwhile few people bother to look behind the scene and learn about the origins of gambling. Gambling has been around since the beginning of recorded history and whether it is legal or not, the plain fact is that people ARE going to gamble. So the real question to ask ourselves now is whether banning online gambling actually make things better, or worse?
|
As usual, the answer can readily be found in the history books. We don't have to look far to see that when you avoid regulating a specific activity and ban it instead, you simply make way for organized crime to take advantage of the situation and fill the vacuum.
We don't ban R (or even X) rated movies, we simply check to make sure that children can not enter the theaters, or rent the movies. Can you imagine a nationwide ban on X-rated movies? Of course not! Citizens would rally against any government that banned from the public market anything that was deemed inappropriate for children. After all, as adults we are considered responsible enough to make our own decisions - aren't we?
The US government is claiming that online casinos are a way for terrorists and criminal organizations to fund their activities. What perverse thinking. This is only true when you have unregulated, unlegalized online casinos that can operate freely. Unregulated casinos can take money from whomever they choose and use their profits for anything they deem fit. However regulated online casinos, like the ones currently fleeing the US market, have shareholders to answer to and government watching their every move. The US government could easily build a wall against terrorists and criminals with sensible online gambling regulation. But they ban it and open a door for these people instead.
Currently the US government is struggling to find money to fund an unpopular war. As young Americans are dying every day, the government is running out of money to send them the proper equipment they need. The online gambling industry, if legalized and regulated, could not only fully fund Bush's war on terror, but could also contribute in other areas where funding is badly needed. Take the road infrastructure in the USA. It's a total embarrassment with potholes everywhere, far inferior to other countries with much lower national incomes. Income from gambling could be used to upgrade the road system.
Soon the baby boomers are going to hit retirement age. At that point social security is going to be emptied and elderly people across the country are going to be left hungry, sick and poor. As much as people are opposed to sending welfare money to the poor, these poor folks are our hardworking grandparents. Maybe the people in the government have the money to care for their aging parents, but do the rest of us? Why can't we take advantage of a widely ignored source of income like online casino gambling?
Legalized online casino gambling could feed the hungry, and help our hard working soldiers. A system could certainly be found where operators of international online casinos could pay the US government a license fee for the numbers of US players they serve. So can someone please remind me one more time - how is online gambling bad for American society?
Yes, we all know that gambling addiction is a serious problem. However many online gambling sites have special software designed to detect problem gamblers and then block them from online gambling. The customer base for online casinos is large enough - only unregulated casinos want to take money from those who don't have it.
The fact is that evidence of gambling was found by archaeologists across the globe. Not only is there evidence of gambling in ancient Rome, ancient China and well documented gambling activities during the Crusades, but most of the online games we play today owe their origins to games played hundreds of years ago.
So there's no question that the largest societies in history have gambled and that gambling will not end just because it is declared illegal. Why not legalize it and make it work for Americans? That's EXACTLY what the Brits are doing.
