Do you gamble or 'play the odds'? [Wednesday, January 10, 2007]

There's been so much media noise and attention recently about the whole business of online gambling, that one is in danger of losing focus about what's really important. It's as if some politicians have suddenly discovered some new evil practice and are determined to stamp it out. However we all know about politicians: yesterday's hot issue is today's forgotten subject, and so on. If a politician cannot get heated under the collar about something, he or she cannot be a politician, you say with some justice.

There are many ways to risk your money in a play activity, whose purpose is to give you more money back than your initial stake. The question is: will your frame of mind have an influence on whether you win or lose? That's the difference between 'playing the odds' (being entertained when risking your money) and 'gambling' (doing whatever is needed to try to win money). In Slots, do you drop in a few coins and hope for the best, or do you religiously feed the machine, trying to project the fat jackpot that may come your way?
By all accounts, you need to be in the first category, not the second. Getting into a casino environment, or playing a game of skill for money, should only be done when you're ready. That means you're well rested, in a good mood and have a sharp head about you. Playing poker, backgammon, roulette or any other game is an activity that calls for concentration. It should not be clouded by tiredness, anger or a feeling of being scared.
Before you start playing, you have decided what's the maximum amount of money that you are prepared to risk (your bankroll). Let's assume it's $200. If you win something over that amount, great! If you lose it all, no problem that was the cost of your entertainment. Copy what professional players do and split your bankroll into portions let's say $50 each for four playing sessions. Once you've reached the limit on every session, stop. Don't kid yourself that the next 'big win' is around the corner.
Be very suspicious of anything that the casino offers you in the way of a 'freebie' alcohol or comp points. In each case the objective is the same: to encourage you to go beyond your natural limits so that you spend more money than you intended.
In real-life casinos, you'll notice the players who are in good spirits. They are laughing and generally making more noise. They are also winning more, because they are more attuned to treating the game just as a game and 'playing the odds'. Play like them, and if you can't, then go and do something else besides gaming. When you play online, keep your sessions short so that you can always stay in a positive mood.
All these tips have been mentioned in many Internet articles. But they are worth repeating over and over again. Because the truth of gambling is simple: Take it easy, be in the mood and you'll do better.
