UK research says: most people gamble for fun [Thursday, February 01, 2007]

Here's an answer to all those government people who keep hitting on Internet gambling, saying that such activity should be banned. Like anything else, when undertaken in moderation and with intelligence, it is quite acceptable. Let's learn something from some recent research.
|
Last year the UK's eCommerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance association commissioned a research study about online gambling habits and preferences. Researchers from the International Gaming Research Unit and Nottingham Trent University questioned 10,865 people from 96 countries. They found that convenience and entertainment, not money, were the primary attractions for playing online.
The study found that poker mostly attracts males (74%) who have gained experience for 2-3 years and play sessions lasting up to 2 hours. Of these players, 27% are aged 26-35. By contrast, most casino gamblers are middle-aged females (55%) who are attracted to slots (80%), also for sessions up to 2 hours, and between 2-3 times weekly.
Most of the people interviewed reported gains or losses of between plus or minus 130 a month. Clearly, people are not gambling in order to chase a fortune! The typical wager was between 15 and 30 a session in casino games, while poker players typically played with 2% to 10% of their bankroll at any one time.
When asked about the appeal of Internet gambling, 36% of respondents (3,925) mentioned convenience and accessibility, while almost 10% (1,075) said it was for fun and excitement. Only 8.2% (893) played online to win or gain financial reward, while 3.9% (427) played for reasons of anonymity and 3% (329) for relaxation.
The most popular online gambling games were video slots, poker and video poker. The vast majority of online gamers (90%) preferred playing at home in the evening, but 1 in 10 women preferred gambling at work.
A manager from the International Gaming Research Unit, Jonathan Parke, commented that this research study was the largest initiative ever undertaken in the area of online gaming. "This exciting research marks the first significant research collaboration between academia and the internet gambling industry to date. Many findings provide a fresh understanding of player behaviour and attitudes", he said.
