India Poker Tour kicks off

Organizers hope to popularize poker in the sub-continent
'4 Cities, 4 Champions, 1 Grand champion'. This is the slogan for the new India Poker Tour, due to take place this autumn, with preliminary events beginning in June 2008.

The success of the Asia Poker Classic held last year in Goa showed that poker is big news in India. Four new poker tournaments are being introduced this year to India as part of the brand new India Poker Tour the first ever poker tour in India.
Tournaments will be held in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi with the final in Goa. Both Indian and international players will compete in the tournament. The games themselves will take place between September and November. The tour will include a Poker School, to help get new players up to speed and a TV special.
The India Poker Tour tour will have a $1 million dollar prize pool and the final will take place in Goa, a region in Southern India with stunning beaches and a laid-back vibe. The IPT is being organized by the same team that created the Asia Poker Classic which, although won by a Dane, created poker waves in India. Third prize went to Indian Pranav Bathija, who taught himself to play in a matter of months.
Card games have always been popular throughout India, although poker is relatively new in the region.
Different terms will apply in the various states. Goa is the only state in India to have legal casinos. Although a grey area, online gambling is not banned by law. Organizers hope to promote the game across India and educate people about poker.
