Charity Poker Event Helps Animals in Need [Wednesday, April 09, 2008]

Animals under the care of the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) found themselves new digs as the chapter celebrated the new wings that were opened thanks to poker star Jennifer Harman.
|
The shelter is a no-kill establishment in Las Vegas and thanks to the poker professional's tireless dedication they now have food, veterinary care, and a place to live. Harman is once again on the crusade to help these animals in their fight to find a new home and loving family and with the help of the Venetian Poker Room, the Second Annual Jennifer Harman Poker Tournament to help the Nevada SPCA will be held on April 18, 2008. All of the proceeds of this no limit Texas Hold'Em poker event including money raised by the silent and live auctions are being donated to help the no-kill shelter.
The games are scheduled to begin at 3:00pm and players who wish to join the event will be asked to donate $300 + $30. Re-donations of $200 will be accepted through the 20 minute games and there will be one last add-on for an additional $200. Players have the chance to not only help a worthy cause, but also win a $10,000 first prize and a seat at the 2008 World Series of Poker main event. The charity tournament is open to the public and players will have a chance to go up against some big name stars.
So far over 100 professional poker players have confirmed that they will be at the charity event. Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Johnny Chan, and defending champion Kirk Morrison are just some of the stars that will sit down to play for the animals. Harman is overwhelmed by the outpouring of caring coming in from her friends and fellow competitors and she claims that money raised this year will allow the shelter to rescue and care for close to 1,000 needy animals. Many of the big names involved in the upcoming poker tournament attended the ribbon cutting of the new wing and animal sanctuary, some of them even going as far as adopting one of the many animals looking for a new and loving home. Suzie Lederer was one of these people, adopting a Chihuahua and donating an additional $5,000 in her husband's name.
