Player Restrictions Continue [Sunday, October 19, 2008]

A long standing source of contention within the online casino industry is the restrictions placed on accepting United States players as registered online users. Governing bodies from the US have taken a step forward by banning players from engaging in online gambling.
|
The restrictions did not stop there. Warnings were handed out to any online casino that continues to accept the deposits and new player accounts from US based players.
Now the online casino industry is fighting back. This fight has entered into a Kentucky courtroom battle arena. Governor Beshear announced last month that all online casino domain registrations that were found to be doing business with US based players will be removed from the internet. The online casino industry responded to the warning by sending qualified legal teams into the Kentucky courtroom. A judge is expected to make a ruling within the coming weeks.
It has become such a heated issue that the final verdict had to be postponed. The lead judge in the case reached this decision in an effort to give all involved parties sufficient time to formulate a battle plan. Part of that battle plan is devising a fight strategy and submitting the necessary documentation to the court for consideration in the final verdict.
That final verdict could prove to be detrimental to the online casino industry. There is not enough of a positive vibe flowing through the industry to certifiably say that the final verdict will be in favor of the online gaming industry websites involved in the legal battle. At stake are the futures of 141 online casino website domains that thrive in part on the business received from US based players.
Even without a verdict being rendered, those online casinos are losing business. When court documentations were filed, the judge temporarily obtained possession of each and every one of the 141 domains listed. It may be true that Kentucky governing bodies are stepping outside of the lines in this case. However if a judge should feel that those lines needed to be crossed in the best interest of the US online gaming population, then a verdict will reflect that feeling.
Such a ruling would give the state of Kentucky more power over the online gaming industry than any other government body has earned in gaming history. Effectively Kentucky could shut down those 141 websites at a minimum and force others to comply with similar orders. Those who do not comply could face stiff penalties. All eyes will be on Kentucky to see what will happen to the future of online casinos.
