World Trade Organization wants US to cancel anti-gaming law
[Tuesday, October 10, 2006]
The balance sheets of European online gaming companies are likely to improve as a result of recent developments in the USA market. The share prices of leading online casino operators nosedived following the USA decision to ban payment to online casinos via credit cards and bank accounts. Now the World Trade Organization (WTO) is set to apply pressure on the USA to repeal the law.
Reports in British media such as the BBC and the Financial Times reveal that the WTO opposes the new American law on the grounds that it is protectionism and therefore contrary to WTO regulations. The fact that the the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA 2006) does not apply to horse-racing or to landed casinos such as those in Las Vegas, says WTO, gives it a discriminatory nature. Adjustments to the law will be required by April 2007.
USA is the largest market for operators of online casinos, which includes Israeli-owned companies such as 888, Empire Online and Playtech.
