Victor Chandler's CEO questioned by Israeli police [Saturday, January 20, 2007]
During his recent visit to Israel, Michael Carlton, the CEO of the British gaming company Victor Chandler, was detained for questioning by Israeli police.
Carlton is suspected of advertising gambling on the Internet in Israel and undertaking sports betting on Israeli teams. The Victor Chandler web site, called VC Bet, has a Hebrew version and directed towards local sports games.
Carlton, a British citizen, arrived in Israel to participate in the Knesset debate on the law proposed by Nurit Tirosh which seeks to restrict payments for Internet gambling in the same way as the American UIGEA law. The legal advisor of the Knesset prevented Carlton from being present at the debate.
After Carlton was questioned by the police's Fraud Squad and made an appearance before the Rishon Lezion court, he was released. The Knesset debate was conducted in the presence of Carlton's lawyer.
The overall government trend in Israel is to act against online gambling, most recently against Online Backgammon. The leading Play65 site was charged with committing an offense by offering online Backgammon games for money play. For the moment, Interlogic has changed its Play65 site to provide only Practice Play. At the same time the company argues that Backgammon, like Poker, is a game of skill and not a game of chance. The issue is still in debate.
