Atlantic City casinos in deal for NY train service

Two of Atlantic City's major casinos, Borgata Hotel Casino and Harrah's Entertainment (the world's largest gambling company) have formed a joint venture company to set up an efficient express rail link from New York. In this way they hope to attract younger and more affluent customers from the Big Apple, leaving from Penn Station.

Both companies will invest $17 million in buying and refurbishing eight rail cars. To match this investment, New Jersey Transit, the state's public transportation corporation, is contributing two electric locomotives. The rail service will initially operate over a long weekend (Friday to Sunday) and is expected to carry around 2,000 people back and forth over this 3-day period. The trip will still take about
2 hours 40 minutes, like on a Manhattan bus, but with much greater comfort.
The casinos believe that having an efficient rail link will attract people who have not felt motivated before to visit Atlantic City.
