Billionaire Opens Grand Lisboa Casino in Macau

The Grand Lisboa Casino, a huge building spanning five floors and containing 240 tables as well as 484 slot machines, recently opened its doors in Macau. The casino is located within a 52-story building that will also include a 430-room hotel - due to open later this year.

The owner is Stanley Ho, a Hong Kong billionaire who made fortune by holding a monopoly on gaming in Macau for four decades until 2002. The former Portuguese enclave - two islands and a peninsula off China's southeastern coast - is the only place in China where casinos are legal. It attracts many gambling-crazy Chinese from the mainland who have turned Macau into a larger gambling destination than Las Vegas.
The whole Stanley Ho building is designed to catch the eye, with a round base that is covered in lights that flash red, green and gold. The lobby is decorated with 580,000 Swarovski crystals, gold plated leaves and crystal balls. The Grand Lisboa Casino is decorated with plush red carpet and silver light fixtures with strands of crystal beads.
The five-floor casino is owned by Hong Kong billionaire Stanley Ho, who held a monopoly on gaming in Macau for four decades until 2002. The former Portuguese enclave - two islands and a peninsula off China's southeastern coast - is the only place in China where casinos are legal. The 85-year old Ho already owns 17 casinos in Macau and is the area's largest land-owner.
