Comedian wins thousands for national charity [Tuesday, April 10, 2007]

|
Leave it up to Arthur Smith, comedian and playwright, to write his own way to a winning victory. In the "Celebrity Punts" competition, Smith walked away with 650 pounds, raising this money for Vitalise, the national disability charity.
|
Ladbrokes, the bookmaker and online casino operator, who ran the competition in conjunction with The Guardian, generously doubled Smiths winnings in order to give Vitalise a gracious gift of 1,322.
Beginning with a losing bet, Smith set out in the Premiership and didnt give up until he smelled victory. It took some daring bets, by Smith, who is also Vitalises Vice President, made a startling comeback, including backing Italy to win the World Cup on penalties.
"I am delighted to be king of the tipsters," said Smith. "My trick was to disregard all matters of form and logic in order to create a context of ignorance. From this zen condition I followed my instincts and sometimes they came up at ten to one."
David Williams, spokesman for Ladbrokes said, "If Arthur's ever short of work, he'd be welcome to join us at Ladbrokes as one of our traders - we've got the utmost respect for his tipping skills. We're thrilled to be able to write the cheque to Vitalise - a fantastic charity and a worthy winner."
