Is RFID the future of gambling? [Tuesday, December 11, 2007]
|
|
RFID (radio frequency identification) chips were designed to improve casino security and prevent counterfeiting. The special high-tech chips supposedly cannot be copied and can be traced, due to their unique serial number and electronic signal.
|
The idea is that each chip can be tracked back to the table at which it was played and the player whose pocket it lines.
Equipment in the casino detects which chips are real and which are fakes.
The new chips are also a useful marketing tool, assisting the Comps system. The casino can identify how much and on what each player is spending, winning and tipping, to decide which perks they are entitled to.
Wynn Las Vegas and the Macau Venetian have already implemented RFID at some cost the Wynn reportedly spent $2 million on the new chips, double the usual cost.
The same technology has previously been used to track animals and in workplace entry cards.
However, as technology gets more advanced every year, the fraudsters are surely just one step behind.
