The Menominee vows to keep trying for casino project approval [Sunday, January 11, 2009]
The proposed casino project of the Menominee Nation's Kenosha, Wisconsin has been formally rejected by the U.S. government. However, ccording to officials, the tribe vows to keep trying.
In refusing the project, U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said the proposed location was too far from the reservation. He also said that this would lead to a further splintering of the tribe.
The Menominee tribe, Wisconsin's largest and poorest tribe, has a lawsuit pending against the government. The tribe contended that the guidelines are an illegal attempt to quash off-reservation casinos.
Kenosha News reported that Evan Zeppos, spokesman for the Kenosha casino effort, said Wednesday the project will continue in spite of the denial. The spokeman also said that Kenosha should know that the Menominee are aggressively continuing to pursue the casino project.
The Menominee and the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, the tribe partner, have been marketing the $1 billion project as a means to boost the Menominee and the Kenosha community.
