Tohono O odham Nation plans a Las Vegas-style resort, casino in Glendale [Sunday, February 01, 2009]
|
|
A Las Vegas-style resort hotel, convention center and casino at the 91st and Northern Avenues was announced by the Tohono O'odham Nation. The 134-acre property was purchased by the tribe more than five years ago and is within Glendale's city boundaries. The resort will be close to the Jobing.com Arena, the University of Phoenix Stadium, and the new spring training facility for the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The development of the West Valley Resort at Northern Avenue is expected to cost 600 million USD. The 600-room resort is estimated to create 300 million USD in annual economic benefit to the state, according to an economic impact study. It is also estimated that there will be 6,000 construction jobs created during a two-year building phase and 3,000 people is expected to be hired when it opens.
But before the resort can open in 2012, it must first clear some federal hurdles. The tribe, which currently operates three casinos in southern Arizona, must have the property designated as a tribal land. The process involves having the site placed in trust with the federal government. All tribal lands are held by the government in trust for the benefit of the members and the government must approve any property additions.
The Chairman of the Tohono O'odham Nation, Ned Norris, Jr., doesn't expect problems with the land designation. The initial reaction to the project from Peoria and Glendale has been extremely positive, Norris said.
