Commissioner for EU Drafting Plans to Settle Online Gaming Disputes

European Union's new commissioner plans on formulating a policy that resolves disagreements on international online casino operations. The new Internal Markets Commissioner says he will take action in settling the issues about online casinos and open markets that have placed a number of member countries in long discussions, with each having a different degree of non-compliance with the EU regulations. Michel Barnier says he already mandated outlining a position paper on Internet gambling

The paper will be consulted with EU members and it can be reinforced by fall following the approval of the College of Commissioners. Barnier also pointed out that while some countries took a verdict by the Court of Justice favoring Portugal that casino operators could be restricted, it can only be applied to some cases in Portugal
Member nations including France, Germany and Greece have defied EU requirements by not amending their online gambling laws in accordance to EU standards. The countries in violation have the same laws that grant domestic operators or national monopolies a clear advantage over operators from other EU members. A representative of Malta gaming establishment told the Times of Malta that they're open for clarifications of the rules but that should not be used to introduce restrictive practices. Majority of Internet gambling operators are based in Malta.
What the online casino companies assert is that free trade in services should include gambling. Remote Gaming Association is also watching over the event to stand behind the philosophy of ?single market? in EU. The reason behind other countries' restrictions in licensing foreign online casinos is to safeguard the welfare of people with gambling problems and adolescents caused by unregulated gambling. But court review shows that those are easily resolved through other ways than monopolization, and therefore rejects the conditions that only benefit host state.
