Louisiana Experiences Continued Gaming Boom [Saturday, March 25, 2006]
|
|
Casinos in Louisiana are continuing to benefit from last month's post-Katrina boom, with state-licensed casinos bringing in a massive $214.8 million in gambling revenue for the month of February.
|
Despite the closures of three of the state's riverboat casinos, this represents a considerable raise on February last year's $109.1 million take.
Even Harrah's Entertainment re-opening their downtown New Orleans casino just before Mardi Gras, which brought in almost $14 million in 13 days for the casino giant didn't put a damper on Louisiana's rising star.
Three of Harrah's casinos remain closed due to hurricane damage, including two riverboats on Lake Charles. Also closed is the New Orleans based Belle of Orleans, which is considering a move to another Parish.
Slot machines were also showing increased takes at the three race tracks in Louisiana, with winnings up to $32.1 million from February last year's total of $28.2, including $9.7 million at the Angelene Downs track casino slots, up from their $7.7 million take last year. Meanwhile, the five riverboats in the Shreveport area won $72.6 million from patrons, up from $70.3 last February.
The three riverboats in Lake Charles still in operation made $55.7 million, combined with the Delta Downs Casino, a great increase compared with $39.9 before the new L'Auberge Du Lac complex opened in the previous year.
L'Auberge Du Lac, Pinnacle Inc.'s casino has been a huge success with gamblers, bringing in last month's highest take of all the state-licensed casinos a massive $26.2 million.
Among the sharpest rises in earnings since Katrina were the two riverboats in Baton Rouge, which went from $18.9 million in February 2005 to $26.3 million last month.
The state's gambling industry continues to grow with winnings on the increase. However these figures are not including winnings from the states Indian-run casinos, which state law does not require to public disclosure of their winnings.
