The US Senate has passed a new federal law, the Unlawful Gambling Internet Act of 2006, which will make it illegal for banks and credit card companies to process online gaming payments from the US. The effect has been to remove millions from the share value of Internet gambling sites trading on the London Stock Exchange. 888 Holdings lost 26%, Empire Online lost 24% and Playtech dropped by a huge 41%. Managers of these three companies say that this is a temporary setback and that they will relocate their focus to European and Asian markets.
