2006 World Series of Poker Report [Thursday, August 31, 2006]

	The latest series has just finished (August 11) with Jamie Gold winning the main event and pocketing a first prize of $12 million out of the total $25 million pool for the top table. Just under 500 players took part in this event, which was broadcast for the first time by ESPN in a pay-per-view format.
The nine participating players at the top table were Paul Wasicka, Allen Cunningham, Mike Binger, Jamie Gold, Rhett Butler, Richard Lee, Doublas Kim, Erik Friberg and Dan Nassif. After 30 minutes play, the first player (Nassif) was out and four hours later he was followed by Friberg, Kim and Lee. For a long time, Cunningham was second in terms of chips but could not hold on for the many hours of poker play. In the end, it was a tussle between Gold and Wasicka. Gold played a very strong game and gained the advantage by staying focuses and making very few mistakes. He held an 8 to 1 chip advantage over his rivals. The last hand of the game was as follows: Getting a Flop of Q 8 5, Wasicka started first with a bet of $1.5 million in chips. Gold immediately raised. Wasicka talked it out and then called, rolling over pocket Tens. Gold showed Q 9 and was leading with a better pair. The clincher was an Ace and a River of 4, which gave Gold the win. What's Jamie Gold going to do with so much cash? He plans to use a lot of it to help his ailing father, Dr Robert Gold who has Lou Gehrig's disease and so could not be at the WSOP event. "This is all for himI want to make his life as comfortable as possible" he said. Apart from Gold winning $12 million for 1st place, other players did very well too. Wasicka in 2nd place got $6 million and Binger in 3rd place walked away with $4 million. Even Nassif in last place got $1.5 million! So the message is: if you reach the WSOP top table, no way can you lose!
