Poker Tournaments
[Wednesday, March 28, 2007]
Poker has always been the king of card games but was also one of those games that were difficult to learn. Many poker players spent years watching other players to try and pick up tips. It was impossible to learn the game by going into a casino and joining in because the players at the table would all be serious and to have an amateur at the table would be frustrating for them and terrifying for the amateur, who would no doubt lose all their money within a matter of minutes. The same goes for female players. Most females would be put off by the male dominated poker room and find the prospect of learning the game, a daunting one.
Thanks to the advent of the internet and in particular, online poker rooms, many players can log on and play to their hearts content online without feeling intimidated. Many players are beginning to make money playing games such as the ever popular Texas Hold 'em, the most commonly played form of poker around the world and certainly the most popular form on the internet.
There was a time when poker tournaments were costly to buy into and for players to win a place was virtually impossible. In recent years, due to the poker resurgence, many gamers are finding themselves playing for places in poker tournaments all over the world and winning places. Many online casinos are offering gamers the chance to win these much coveted places. On top of the seat in the tournament which often has a huge monetary value, the online casinos are also awarding the winning gamers with all their travelling and accommodation expenses and sometimes even tickets for partners and family members.
The most prestigious tournaments are the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour Tournaments, both held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The most popular European tournament is the Poker Million and there are several other prominent tournaments after these major ones, the World Poker Tour broadcasts a series of open tournaments throughout the U.S. and Caribbean. The United States Poker Championship is held at the Trump Taj Mahal casino and the Plaza casino in Las Vegas hosts the Ultimate Poker Challenge. In Africa, the All Africa Poker Tournament is hosted at the Piggs Peak Casino in Swaziland and in Australia the Crown Australia Poker Championship also known as the 'Aussie Millions' is becoming one of the world's largest tournaments. In the 2007 tournament there were 747 entrants and a prize pool of AUD$7.47 Million.
