Online card games continues growing, with Poker as King [Thursday, January 19, 2006]

The urge to play cards online and to bet is growing with many people choosing to play Poker. A recent survey conducted by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania reported that 11.4% of males between 14 and 22 bet on cards at least once a week in 2004, up from 6.2% in 2003. In addition, 11% of these players are likely to gamble on the Internet. The report further stated that 43.2% of players who played cards for money did so on the Internet.

Within this population of Internet gamblers, online poker is a favorite. Market research specialists The River City Group estimate that a million players in the States play Poker monthly on their computers, making it a $2 billion-a-year industry. Another interesting statistic is provided by ComScore Media Metrix, which annually measures all U.S Internet users at home, work and college locations. They say that out of a total audience of 165 million American web surfers, over 1 in 5 go on line uniquely for gambling (over 29 million).
CasinoCity.com says that the most popular online poker sites include PartyPoker.com, Pacific Poker, PokerRoom.com, Empire Poker and Poker World Online Cardroom. Meanwhile, another gaming company PartyGaming (the parent of PartyPoker.com) recently went public on the London Stock Exchange in an IPO valued at $9 billion. According to press reports, the company reported a profit of $371 million in 2004 on revenue of $601.6 million. Thats the measure of online gaming in general and online Poker in particular.
Alongside the achievements of a strong growth industry are also growing voices that raise many public policy, legal and e-commerce questions. They ask how healthy it is for an increasing number of school-aged males to be joining the mainstream of online gambling. Daniel Romer, research director of Annenberg's Adolescent Risk Communications Institute, says There's a lot of concern about whether this is legal, especially when it's a form of gambling that is accessible to adolescents. He points out that underage players can easily side step the age regulations that apply in off-line gambling: casinos only admit people over 21; lottery tickets can only be sold to those 18 and older.
The appeal of Poker, however, keeps attracting players from every corner. Cable TV in the US is full of Poker programs: "Celebrity Poker Showdown," "Poker Superstars Invitational Tournaments," "National Heads-Up Poker Championship," "Ultimate Poker Challenge" and "World Poker Tour", to name a few. Then there are the myriad Poker options on the Web. This is the game that very often attracts players to try other forms of gambling too.
Can Internet gambling be limited or controlled? Many countries have tried, but its hard to go against the flow of public sentiment. The fact is that people want to gamble and they will always find a place where it is a legal activity. With the Internet there are no boundaries.
