This guide to online Poker contains some special terminology which may be unfamiliar. We provide this useful glossary, written in a clear and concise manner, to help you understand the terms and play a better game.

Aces Full
|
Full house with three aces plus any other pair of cards (good poker hand)
|
|
Action
|
Any type of bet or wager, many bets and raises is 'a lot of poker action'
|
|
Ante
|
Small bet as the minimum bet that each player is required to put into the pot before a new hand starts, compulsory opening bet
|
|
Bad Beat
|
Losing a poker pot holding a very strong hand you were sure would win
|
|
Behind
|
Before the last cards have been dealt, if you don't have the best hand you are 'behind'
|
|
Bet the Pot
|
When a bet is equivalent to the cash amount already in the poker pot
|
|
Bicycle Wheel
|
The poker hand Ace,2,3,4,5, also called a wheel or bicycle
|
|
Big Bet Poker
|
A term often used in poker to describe a pot limit and No Limit poker
|
|
Blank
|
A card that does not to help any poker player
|
|
Boat
|
Also called a full house
|
|
Bump
|
To raise the poker bet
|
|
Busted Hand
|
A poker hand worth less than a pair (for example, if you miss a straight, you have a busted straight)
|
|
Call
|
To call is to match the poker game's current bet
|
|
Check
|
Pass the turn of calling the first bet in a betting round to the next poker player
|
|
Cold Call
|
To call more than one bet (for example, one player bets, the next raises and the next calls)
|
|
Collusion
|
When two or more poker players plan to try and cheat another player
|
|
Dead
|
A poker hand that is no longer eligible to win the pot
|
|
Drop
|
To Fold or abandon your poker hand, or throw away your cards without calling a bet
|
|
Fill
|
To draw a card that makes a good solid five-card hand (straight, flush, full house, straight flush)
|
|
Flush
|
Five cards of the same suit for a poker hand
|
|
Fold
|
To lay down your hand when it is your turn, a folded hand gives up any chance of winning the poker pot
|
|
Freeroll
|
Used in online poker rooms in order to show a site's looks and feel to new players before playing for real money
|
|
Inside Straight (Draw)
|
A draw to a straight is missing one a middle card, 4578 is an inside straight, 4567 is an outside straight (called a one-gapper or gutshot)
|
|
Jammed Pot
|
A poker pot that has been raised the maximum amount of times
|
|
Kicker
|
The highest unpaired card in your hand not in a straight or flush, a card that does not add to a better poker hand
|
|
Limit (Limit Poker)
|
Any poker game in which there is a fixed maximum limit on how much you can bet or raise in any round
|
|
Monster
|
A very strong hand in poker, one that is almost certain to win the pot
|
|
Outdraw
|
To make a better hand than an your opponent when you more cards
|
|
Paint
|
All face cards, Jack, Queen & King
|
|
Pass
|
To not bet, or to fold
|
|
Poker Hand
|
A set of exactly five cards that make up a hand according to the accepted list of poker hands
|
|
Qualifier
|
The minimum standard a poker hand must meet to be eligible to win part of the pot
|
|
Rake
|
The percentage of a pot that the casino keeps, usually a percentage (5-10%) or flat fee is taken from the pot after each round of betting.

|
River
|
The 7th and last card dealt in Hold'em, Omaha, or Seven-Card Stud, staying in until the fifth and final round of betting is called going to the river
|
|
Royal Flush
|
Also called a Royal Straight Flush or Royal, it is an Ace-high straight flush, the best poker hand
|
|
Scare Card
|
A card that that increases your chances for a better hand (In Hold'em, a third suited card on the river because you might get a flush)
|
|
Short Call
|
To call part of a bet in table stakes with all your poker money
|
|
Tap You
|
A raise, it is also used when a player bets an amount equal to all the money their opponent has on the table in table stakes
|
|
Thirty Days or Thirty Miles
|
Three tens
|
|
Tiger
|
A low hand in poker from the two to the seven cards
|
|
Tight Player
|
A poker player who bets infrequently unless he has a strong hand
|
|
Tilt (Tilting)
|
Poker players 'on tilt' make bad betting decisions based o their emotions
|
|
Time Cut
|
Also called Axe or Collection, its the money charged each player on a time basis, usually on a three minute or an hourly basis
|
|
Trap
|
You're 'trapped' if after putting money in the pot you're faced with having to call a raise to continue
|
|
Unlimited Poker
|
Poker games with no limits placed on bets or raises
|
|
Wire-up
|
Three-of-a-kind poker hand pulled off with the first three cards
