This guide to online Blackjack contains some special terminology which may be unfamiliar. We provide this useful glossary, written in a clear and concise manner, to help you understand the terms and play a better game.

Anchor
|
Last taken seat to the dealer's right
|
|
Black Chip
|
A $100 blackjack chip
|
|
Blackjack
|
Total of 21 on your opening two-card hand
|
|
Break (Bust)
|
Exceeding a hand total of 21 pointsand lose the hand
|
|
Burn Cards
|
Take away cards from the top of the deck and place them in the discard tray after shuffling and cutting
|
|
Double Down (Doubling Down)
|
The option of doubling your initial bet after the initial two-card deal, but you can hit only one card, turn over your first two cards
|
|
Double Exposure
|
Blackjack game in which both dealer cards are shown to the player before they play their hand, some house rules may be changed
|
|
Early Surrender
|
Surrender allowed before the dealer checks for blackjack, a player may give up after their first two cards but before the dealer checks for an Ace in the hole
|
|
Face Cards
|
Jacks, Queens and Kings, all with a value of 10
|
|
Face Down Game
|
Your first card is placed face up while the second one is placed face down
|
|
Face Up Game
|
Both your cards are placed face up
|
|
First Base
|
First taken seat to dealer's left, where the first card is dealt, the first blackjack player to receive cards when the dealer deals the cards
|
|
Hard Hand (Hard Total)
|
A hand without an Ace, or with an Ace valued at 1, it can only be given one value
|
|
Heads Up or Heads On
|
A head to head play with the blackjack dealer only, with no other blackjack players
|
|
Hi-Lo Count
|
One-level blackjack card counting system where cards 2 - 6 cards get a value of plus one and the 10s and face cards get a value of minus one
|
|
Hi-Opt
|
One-level blackjack card counting system, it assigns the value of plus one to 3's, 4's, 5's and 6's; minus one to 10s cards
|
|
Hole Card
|
This is the facedown card that the blackjack dealer gets
|
|
Hot Deck
|
To take another card from the blackjack deck
|
|
Insurance
|
Side bet up to half the initial bet against the dealer having a natural 21, offered only when the blackjack dealers up card is an Ace, Insurance bets win double when the dealer has a natural
|
|
Late Surrender
|
Surrender allowed only if the blackjack dealer does not have blackjack card
|
|
Natural
|
Blackjack, a two-card hand of 21 points, when the first two cards dealt are an Ace and a 10 value card totaling 21 in value
|
|
No Double after Split
|
Casino rules that do not allow doubling when the player has split two cards
|
|
Paint
|
The face cards, Jack, Queen and King
|
|
Past Post
|
Cheat by placing or adding to a bet after no bets are allowed because there might be information about the card result
|
|
Pat (Pat Hand)
|
In blackjack, an unbusted hand is worth at least 17
|
|
Point Count
|
Refers to card counting systems, it is the net value of the card count at the end of a hand
|
|
Preferential Shuffling
|
Card shuffling when the remaining cards are believed to be favorable to the players
|
|
Push (Tie or Stand-off)
|
Both the player and dealer have the same hand total, the player keeps the bet
|
|
Soft Double
|
Double down on a blackjack hand with an ace as part of the initial hand
|
|
Stand or Stay
|
Not requiring any more cards, and to stop taking another card
|
|
Standing Hand
|
In blackjack, a hand that hard-totals at least 17, which is very likely to bust if one more cards are called, the player is expected to stand
|
|
Stand-off (Tie or Push)
|
Both player and dealer have the same hand total, so the player keeps the bet
|
|
Steaming
|
A blackjack player upset with the bad turn of events at the blackjack game and is betting more aggressively and recklessly
|
|
Stiff Hand
|
Hand with little chance of winning blackjack because the hand is not pat and can bust if hit once, Stiffs include hands 12 through 16
|
|
Surrender
|
Giving up your hand and lose only half the bet, when you surrender, the dealer will takes your cards, and you lose half of your bet
|
|
Tell Play
|
Observing the blackjack dealer's body language and expressions to determine their card hand
|
|
Third Base
|
Last seat taken seat to the blackjack dealer's right
|
|
Tie (Also Push or Stand-off)
|
Both player and dealer have the same hand total, so the player keeps the bet
|
|
True Count
|
The running card count adjusted to account for the number of cards left in the deck or shoe still to be played
|
|
Unbalanced Count
|
A card count where the number of plus and minus cards are unequal
|
|
Up Card (Upcard)
|
The blackjack dealer's first dealt card, placed face up for all the players to see before they play their hands
|
