Slots for Ohio's seven racetracks
[Wednesday, June 21, 2006]
The seven racetracks in America's Ohio Valley (and in other locations) are pushing for the tight to own and operate casinos in particular for slot machines.
In Ohio's neighboring state West Virginia four racetracks already have slots machines. These racetracks have found slots machines so successful that they want to add games like poker, blackjack, craps and roulette into the mix. The Ohio Valley is surrounded by Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia.
Ohio has already starting working on a constitutional amendment to allow slots machines at any of its seven racetracks, and in other locations. Other slots machines would be free standing in some of Ohio's larger cities. Though this measure is only to be voted upon in November, the plan already allows for counties with slots machines to vote on casino building after a four year trial period.
The arguments for and against the Ohio slots machines are the same as arguments across the nation. Many behind the amendment are claiming a jump in revenues for the state of Ohio that could be used in turn to help out Ohioans. If Ohio does adopt new slots and casino it will help West Virginia on their bid for table games. Many are worried about how many casinos this economically depressed area can handle, but since the proposed slots will be bringing money into the state and not out most people hope the machines will be an added boost.
