Pennsylvania casinos competing for 14 slot machine licenses
[Thursday, June 22, 2006]
A battle over 14 competitive slot machine licenses in Pennsylvania is quickly turning into a war over the hearts of local officials, business leaders and private citizens. Twenty two applicants are being examined in the next two months at a public evidence hearing run by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.
The purpose of the hearings is to look at applicants for the 14 available slot licenses, and discuss how their plans for these licenses will affect local economic development through tourism.
The distribution of the licenses are: 2 for standalone slots; 1 for Pittsburgh; 2 for Philadelphia; 7 for racetracks and 2 for resorts.
The competition for racetrack and resort licenses face no direct competition and only have to bring their applications to the court for examination. The competition for the other licenses available promises to be intense.
Four applicants for the two standalone slots licenses are located in the Poconos, a winter and summer vacation haven for those living in the northeast states. The Poconos are home to casinos, ski resorts/water parks, outlet shopping and are especially loved for the faraway, small town, outdoor atmosphere.
Whichever company gets the license the local towns will no doubt benefit immensely in added revenue, jobs and a booming tourism industry.
