As poker grows in popularity due to televised poker games, and the online poker world, the number of poker professionals is growing along with it. But there is a major difference between a poker professional, a person whose sole occupation in life is poker, and a poker celebrity. This is a professional who has managed to make a huge impact. A lot of major poker celebrities are serious hits in the poker world, but are still unknown by amateur poker players. Here is a list of the top five poker players to help you learn your way around the poker circuit.
|
Number One: Men Nguyen. The top poker celebrity is Men Nguyen (American, of Vietnamese descent), aka "The Master". Men's nickname came from the very simple fact that, as far as this writer and poker fan is concerned, he is the absolute most dedicated poker player who exists today on the poker circuit. Although Men might not look too focused to a first time observer, but as it should be in the world of poker, his actions aren't showing his thoughts. Men is always eager to learn more strategies and gaming moves. He is also known for his ability to read his opponent's hands, and is also considered to be one of the most pleasant poker players that one can play against. For these reasons, Men Nguyen is the number one poker player!
Number Two: Thomas J Cloutier. As the only person in the history of the World Series of Poker to have won events in Pot Limit High, Limit High and Limit 8 or Better High-Low split, Thomas J. Cloutier is the number two celebrity poker player of today. Cloutier has won more tournaments than any other poker professional and even fellow poker pros consider him to be one of the world's best players. Winning more money than titles in tournaments, Cloutier is the first person to ever win more than one million dollars at a tournament without winning the main event. Over the years Cloutier has taken home over Seven Million Dollars!
Number Three: Phil Hellmuth. The poker player in this third spot achieved more than any other player is such a short period of time. Phil Hellmuth is the youngest person to ever win the World Series of Poker title (at age 24!). He has nine World Series of Poker bracelets, and has won over 50 tournaments in his short career. One of his many published poker books entered The New York Times Bestseller list. Although his goal is to be known as the best poker player of all time, for the moment Hellmuth is considered to be two rungs down from the top spot. Considering that Phil is young and has many more years to go, being Number Three is not bad at all!
Number Four: Johnny Chan. Johnny won the World Series of Poker two years in a row and almost made it a tripe run (he once again came in behind Hellmuth). After publishing two poker books, Johnny Chan played himself in the poker movie, "Rounders" as the best poker player in the world. Chan entered the Poker Hall of Fame in 2002 and his great poker moves have kept him within the handful of the worlds top poker players.
Number Five: Phil Laak. Phil got his nickname "The Unabomber" for wearing a hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses at the poker table. Here is certainly a personality that you dont forget in a hurry!. Phil Laak may not be considered as one of the greatest achievers in poker history, but his attitude towards the game is thoroughly unique and that is what has pushed him towards a top ranking. Laak stays focused on his gaming moves during the poker game, rather than dwell on his situation within the game. At times Laak allows himself to "go for the win", however it is not his strategy. For Laak, it's the quality of the game not the quantity of the wins that counts. That's why Laak is one of the Top Five Poker Players!
