Why people prefer (lots of) Slots [domenica 28 gennaio 2007]

Forget about the payout advantage. We all know that online and offline casinos make a pack of money from each slot machine! The fact is that playing Slots is the most popular gambling activity around. Maybe only lotteries attract more bets in total - but even they cannot match the mesmerizing appeal of pulling that lever or punching that 'play' button one more time. The whole game is open-ended, that's the attraction. We all hope that 'from little things, large things will grow', such as dropping a coin in a machine, pushing the button and then seconds later being showered with an endless stream of coins.

There are two approaches to take when playing slots. The first one, called 'having a random chance', determines that every chance of winning is identical to the one that preceded it. There can be several payouts within minutes of each other, or none for ages. The second approach says that the game is a 'law of probabilities'. Once there has been a payout, there will not be another for a while. Conversely, if there has been a long 'dry' period, then a payout may be imminent. This is the more likely scenario, because slot machine manufacturers have to show a certain frequency of payment or lose their customers.
The essential factor behind these machines is being able to show hundreds of icons, so that odds can be made long enough to justify making five-figure jackpot payouts. The original slot machine had reels of a certain size that could only accommodate a certain number of strawberries, lemons or whatever. Only when the machines switched from presenting these icons on a reel to presenting them on long strips of celluloid was the problem overcome. Of course, with today's digital electronics, there are no more limitations. Modern-day machines allow for simultaneous play on multiple lines. That gives the player more chances to win, but also gives the casino multiplied earning power.
Winning at Slots is a tough call because the game really is tilted towards the operator. The machine will always collect more money than it pays out. Some estimate that the House Advantage can even reach 35%. The key is very often how the machine is programmed for the 'small wins'. Let's say that a slot machine will pay out $25 wins relatively frequently. That will attract a lot of people to throw money into it and the overall income will therefore be large. Somebody may win $50 and lose $1000 and still feel a winner. She will concentrate not on the $950 that she lost but on the $50 that she won. Such is human nature.
Is there a strategy to follow in playing slot machines? There's no 'winning strategy', only an 'entertainment strategy'. The best advice to give a player is to split the slots gambling stake into equal parts (say, four). The player then starts with the first slots machine. If it delivers a payment, he continues. If not, he moves to a second machine, and so on. After the fourth machine, the player quits. He's had some good gambling entertainment, and that's enough.
